Our client was operating with a GitHub Enterprise Cloud (GHEC) instance, but rapid growth and strict compliance requirements demanded a superior identity governance solution. They needed to migrate three internal organizations to GitHub’s Enterprise Managed Users (EMU) configuration, which centralizes user and access management through Azure AD.

This critical project faced several high-risk challenges:

• Migrating over 550 repositories across three organizations without causing operational disruptions.
• Ensuring full preservation of commit history, branches, tags, permissions, and configurations with zero corruption during migration to the new endpoint.
• Repointing hundreds of existing pipelines (both in GitHub Actions and Jenkins) to ensure seamless operation under the new EMU configuration.

The Solution: Migration Engineering and Proactive Risk Management

CleverIT was selected as the strategic partner to ensure a safe and frictionless transition from GHEC to EMU, standing out for its specialized methodology and detailed project management approach (as highlighted in client feedback).

The solution was based on a phased migration execution strategy and a Zero-Risk Support protocol:

• Conducted a thorough audit of the original GHEC environment and designed an endpoint-level pipeline repointing strategy to minimize downtime risk.
• Migrated all repositories to the new EMU configuration, implementing integrity validations at every phase to guarantee full data preservation.
• Repointed all pipelines (including Jenkins endpoints) to the new GHEMU environment, followed by rigorous acceptance testing to ensure that deployment workflows remained unaffected.
• Provided continuous support through the completion of the service with zero incidents, validating full functionality of the new environment.
